The AIM-9 Sidewinder Missile is a short range heat seeking missile. Its effective range is between 200 and 4200 meters.

How to use Edit

The AIM-9 Sidewinder does not require radar lock or a FLIR targeting ball; it locks on to an enemy heat signature. While you have the missile selected as your weapon, you will hear a low humming sound. On your display, you should see a broken circle in front of your craft. If an enemy craft is within the circle (and within range) the missile will lock on, producing a higher pitch humming sound. A dot will appear in front of the locked-on craft, showing the optimal direction to fire the missile to properly lead the target. Once fired, the missile with guide itself to the target.

With an extremely long shelf life, the Sidewinder entered service in 1956 and is seen as a highly important air-to-air missile. Due to its cheap cost and effectiveness, its very possible the missile could stay in military service for decades to come.
